M12 vase, Manila Decor
Description: This West German pottery vase is Carstens shape M12, "Manila" decor designed by Heinz Siery, featuring a strong red top glaze with dark brown geometric images rather like hieroglyphs. The textured surface has a symbiotic relationship with the glazes with the texture allowing the underglaze to show through, and that gives definition to the symbols. These embossed glyph designs became popular in the early 1960s, especially for Carstens and Bay. It was also a time when square or otherwise angular forms became more popular, and the flat surface certainly shows the designs well.
